What do you know about Moonshine?

Unless you're an "oldtimer", what you know about 'Shine might be limited to what you see on the re-runs of "The Beverly Hillbillies" from 1962.  Images of Granny feeling a little poorly and having to take a dose of her "tonic".  In remembering one of the old uncles in the Jones clan, we salvaged a few of the original parts to his "pot still".  With the help of our friend, Bob Jenkins over at Bellwether in McDonough Georgia, we have re-created a likeness of what an original backwoods still would have looked like, complete with the constant flow of the "shine" into our old triple X crock.

So stop in and have a look at our reproduction.  Careful not to drink any of the stuff coming

out of the stills old copper pipe, we can promise you it isn't anything at all like the tonic that

Granny used to make!  Her "Tennesse Tranqualizer" came from her expert use of that old still and some local corn.  Ours on the other hand comes courtesy of the City of Stockbridge Water Authority!  And don't you worry, no corn was harmed in the making of our "Local Product".

Ya'll come back now, ya hear!

A little history lesson.....

Moonshining was big business back in its day in the hills surrounding the Southern states.  Mostly called "White Lightning" it is never aged, has a high alcohol content and is crystal clear. You mostly find it in sold in Mason jars. A typical moonshine still can produce up to 1000 gallons of "White Lightning" per week, giving the Moonshiner a pretty nice income, despite the many dangers!  Making 'shine is an easy process using simple, easy to get ingredients like corn and sugar.  Remember, whats illeagal about moonshine isn't the product itself, its the fact that there were no taxes paid on it!  On average about half of the cost of a bottle of liquor is the tax paid to the government!  In early times you also found that there were more places where the sale of alcohol was not permitted.  Now that it is legal to purchase alcohol products almost anywhere, the need for the illegal spirit is almost nonexistant. One thing we can give moonshine credit for is the modern day stock car racing! Yes, NASCAR!  Back during the times of prohibition, the old moonshine runners would modify their automobiles to make certain they could outrun the federal government  revenue agents.  How's that for learning a little bit of history?
